Marrakech desert tours run from two nights to a full week; from Fes the desert is a single long day away, which makes a three or four day crossing to Marrakech the natural shape.
Morocco has two well-known dune fields, and choosing between them shapes the whole route. Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga in the east, is reached on sealed roads and has the widest range of camps, from simple to elaborate. Erg Chigaga, beyond M'Hamid in the south, is smaller in reputation and larger in feel: it needs a 4x4 transfer across open desert, and there is far less around it. Neither is better, and the itineraries below are starting points rather than fixed packages.
One night or two
A single desert night works, and many routes use it. You arrive in late afternoon, watch the light go, eat, sleep under an unusually complete sky and leave after sunrise. It is beautiful and it is brief.
A second night changes the register entirely. The driving day is behind you, and a full day opens up for walking the dune crests, visiting a nomadic family, seeing the oasis villages or simply staying still. Travellers who add the second night rarely regret it, particularly after a long approach.
Camel, 4x4 or on foot
The camel ride into camp is optional everywhere we work. It is a slow, gentle hour or so at the end of the day, and it is not comfortable for everyone; a 4x4 transfer covers the same ground in minutes and is always available instead. Short walks from camp at first and last light are often the part people remember most.

Seasons in the desert
October to April is the natural window: warm days, cold clear nights, and comfortable walking. Midwinter nights genuinely drop near freezing, and good camps provide heavy blankets and heating in the tents. From late May to August, daytime heat is severe — desert time then shifts to early morning and evening, and shorter stays make more sense. Spring can bring wind and haze for a day or two; it passes.
Realistic driving
Marrakech to Erg Chebbi is a long two-day drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the Dades or Todra valleys, not a day trip. Marrakech to Erg Chigaga runs through the Draa Valley to Zagora and M'Hamid, then a desert transfer of roughly an hour and a half. Fes to Erg Chebbi is a single long day via Ifrane and the Ziz. We plan these with stops built in rather than pretending the distances are short.
