The Atlantic and the Mediterranean are not the same trip
Morocco's coastline runs for thousands of kilometres, and the two seas behave differently. The Atlantic is wide, windswept and working: fishing ports, long beaches, cliffs and the steady swell that made Essaouira and Taghazout what they are. The Mediterranean north is greener and more sheltered, with small coves, Rif hillsides and the Spanish-Andalusian layers of Tetouan and Chefchaouen inland.
The routes below are starting points. Most travellers combine a coastal stretch with inland Morocco rather than following the shore end to end.
South along the Atlantic
Heading south from Marrakech or Essaouira, the coast becomes progressively emptier: argan country, the surf villages around Taghazout, the cliffs at Legzira and Mirleft, then the long open road towards Dakhla. Days are easy, driving is straightforward, and the interest lies in fishing harbours, lagoons and birdlife rather than monuments.
North towards Casablanca and the Mediterranean
Northwards the coast is denser and more historic — El Jadida's Portuguese cistern, Casablanca's twentieth-century architecture, Rabat's kasbah, and then Tangier and the Mediterranean shore. This direction combines naturally with Fes, Meknes and Chefchaouen, and works well for travellers arriving or leaving through northern airports.

Pacing
Coastal days are the slow part of most itineraries, and they should be. Two nights in one place is usually better than one night in two: the towns are small, the pleasure is in walking them at dusk, and the driving between them is short enough that nothing is lost.
Seasons
The Atlantic is temperate all year and noticeably cooler than inland Morocco — a relief in summer, breezy in winter, and often overcast in the early morning before the sun burns through. Wind is a constant near Essaouira. The Mediterranean north is warmest from May to October and greenest in spring.
Combining coast and interior
The most balanced Morocco routes alternate: medina, mountains, desert, then the sea to finish. Ending on the coast gives a natural decompression before flying home. Any of these coastal routes can be shortened, extended or folded into a longer journey — they are drafts, not fixed packages.
