7-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech: Sahara & Southern Morocco

Day by day

1. Day 1

   Arrival in Marrakech

   Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport, where your private English-speaking driver will meet you and transfer you to your riad inside or near the historic medina. The first day is deliberately easy. After your flight, there is no need to begin with a long list of monuments. Settle into your accommodation, rest, and take a first walk through the medina if you feel ready. Depending on your arrival time, you may experience Jemaa el-Fna as the square begins to change toward evening, with food stalls, musicians and the energy for which Marrakech is famous. 2. Day 2

   Private Guided Tour of Marrakech

   Meet your licensed local guide for a full exploration of Marrakech. Begin with major architectural landmarks such as Bahia Palace, where painted cedar ceilings, carved plaster and zellij tilework reveal the refinement of nineteenth-century Moroccan design. Continue toward the Saadian Tombs and the Koutoubia area before entering the souks and artisan quarters of the medina. Your guide helps make sense of the different trades, neighborhoods and traditions rather than simply walking you through a maze of shops. There is time for quieter lanes, workshops and local context before ending around Jemaa el-Fna, where Marrakech’s public life becomes most visible toward late afternoon and evening. Dinner can be arranged at your riad or left open so you can explore one of Marrakech’s restaurants. Overnight in Marrakech.

3. Day 3

   Marrakech, High Atlas, Telouet, Ounila Valley, Aït Ben Haddou & Skoura

   Leave Marrakech after breakfast and begin climbing into the High Atlas Mountains. Rather than taking only the fastest road toward Ouarzazate, turn toward Telouet, once associated with the powerful Glaoui family. Visit the kasbah according to current access conditions and continue through the Ounila Valley, one of the most beautiful roads in southern Morocco. The valley links small villages, earthen architecture and cultivated terraces before reaching Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar that once stood along important caravan routes. Explore the ksar with a local guide, then continue through Ouarzazate toward Skoura Oasis. Arrive in the late afternoon and settle into a character lodge or kasbah surrounded by palms. Overnight in Skoura.

4. Day 4

   Skoura, Valley of Roses, Todra Gorge & Merzouga

   Leave Skoura after breakfast and travel east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Pass through the Valley of Roses, a beautiful agricultural region throughout the year, although the roses themselves are normally associated with spring. Continue toward Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where immense limestone walls rise above the river and palm groves. Take time to walk through the narrowest section before continuing toward the Sahara. After lunch along the route, travel through Erfoud and the Tafilalt region toward Merzouga. Late in the afternoon, exchange the road vehicle for camels and ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Pause on a high dune for sunset while your driver transfers your main luggage to camp by 4x4. Arrive at your private ensuite tent, freshen up with a hot shower, and enjoy dinner before gathering around the fire for traditional music and stargazing. Guests who prefer not to ride camels can always reach the camp by 4x4. Overnight at a luxury desert camp.

5. Day 5

   Erg Chebbi: A Full Sahara Day

   Wake early if you would like to watch sunrise over the dunes before breakfast. Today is deliberately kept in the Sahara. One night gives you the visual experience of arriving by camel and sleeping in the dunes; a second night gives you time to understand the region around them. Explore Erg Chebbi by 4x4, visiting different desert landscapes and communities around Merzouga. Stop in Khamlia to experience Gnawa music and learn about the West African influences that form part of the region’s cultural history. Where respectfully and genuinely arranged, there may be an opportunity to have tea with local or nomadic families. This should never be treated as a staged attraction or guaranteed encounter. A highlight of the day can be a local lunch, including medfouna, sometimes described as Berber pizza — stuffed bread traditionally prepared with meat, herbs and spices. Depending on the arrangement, guests may be able to see or participate in parts of its preparation. Return to the camp or desert accommodation in the afternoon, with time for the dunes, sandboarding or simply relaxing before another Sahara sunset. Overnight in the Sahara / Erg Chebbi.

6. Day 6

   Merzouga, Alnif, Nkob, Draa Valley & Marrakech

   After breakfast, leave the Sahara and travel west through a very different section of southern Morocco. Pass through Alnif and Tazzarine toward Nkob, known for its earthen kasbah architecture and setting between desert plateaus and palm groves. Continue toward the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s great oasis landscapes. The valley’s palm groves and ksour once formed part of historic routes linking Saharan trade with northern Morocco. Follow the valley toward Agdz and Ouarzazate before crossing the High Atlas back toward Marrakech. This is the longest driving day of the journey, but the changing landscapes make it much more than a simple transfer. If you prefer an easier pace, the itinerary can be extended by one night in the Draa Valley or Ouarzazate / Skoura region. Arrive in Marrakech in the evening for your final night.

7. Day 7

   Departure

   Your driver will collect you from your riad according to your flight schedule and transfer you privately to Marrakech Airport. This marks the end of your seven-day private journey through Marrakech, southern Morocco and the Sahara.
