Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour: 4 Days via Erg Chebbi
A spectacular private overland journey linking Morocco’s two great medinas through kasbah country and Erg Chebbi.
Rather than driving Marrakech to Fes directly — a long day on the motorway with nothing to show for it — this four-day private route connects the two cities the interesting way: south over the High Atlas, east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, two nights at the dunes of Erg Chebbi, and then north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas.
It is the most efficient itinerary in our Sahara collection, in the sense that no distance is wasted. Every kilometre moves you toward Fes while passing through Aït Ben Haddou, the Skoura palm grove, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge and the Tafilalt oases. Travellers who fly into Marrakech and out of Fes, or the reverse, get a complete cross-section of Morocco without backtracking.
The Sahara chapter is deliberately given two nights. The first evening is the arrival: the dune approach by camel or 4x4, sunset from a high ridge, dinner and music at camp. The following day belongs to the region — a 4x4 circuit across surfaces well beyond the sand sea, the Gnawa village of Khamlia, fossil beds around Erfoud, and the market town of Rissani where the Alaouite dynasty began.
Driving is honest: two of the four days involve five to seven hours on the road, broken by real stops rather than fuel halts. The route runs equally well in the opposite direction, Fes to Marrakech, and the days can be reshuffled if your flights require it.
Everything is private, camel riding is optional at every stage, and the itinerary below is a starting point rather than a fixed package.

Day 1
Marrakech, the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley
Leave Marrakech early and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints on the way up and among the walnut villages on the descent. Visit Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified ksar above the Ounila river, with a local guide. Continue past Ouarzazate and through the Skoura palm grove and Kelaat M'Gouna, arriving in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon, where eroded rock formations rise above earthen villages. Overnight in the Dades Valley.
Day 2
Todra Gorge, the Tafilalt and Erg Chebbi
Drive to Tinghir, where a long palm oasis runs below the town, and walk into the Todra Gorge between limestone walls several hundred metres high. Continue east through Tinejdad and Erfoud into the Tafilalt, the oasis region at the desert's edge. Reach Merzouga in the late afternoon and enter Erg Chebbi — by camel if you would like the traditional approach, or comfortably by 4x4 if you prefer. Sunset from the dunes, then dinner, fire and music at a private ensuite camp. Overnight in the Sahara.
Day 3
A full day at Erg Chebbi
Watch sunrise over the dunes, then spend the day exploring the region rather than driving away from it. A 4x4 circuit typically covers the desert beyond the sand sea, the dry lake bed, old mining settlements, and Khamlia, where families descended from sub-Saharan communities maintain a distinctive Gnawa musical tradition and will explain its context. Fossil workshops near Erfoud and the Monday, Thursday or Sunday market at Rissani can be added. Afternoon free in the dunes for sandboarding, walking or rest. Overnight in the Sahara.
Day 4
The Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas and Fes
The northward crossing, and one of the most scenic drives in Morocco. Follow the Ziz Valley upstream, where a dense ribbon of palms and fortified villages runs between red cliffs, with viewpoints over the gorge. Climb through Er Rachidia and Midelt onto the high plateau, then into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas near Azrou, where Barbary macaques are sometimes seen from the roadside — observed respectfully and never fed. Pass through the alpine-styled town of Ifrane and arrive in Fes in the late afternoon.

Who it suits
Travellers with open-jaw flights, or anyone combining Marrakech and Fes who does not want to lose a whole day on the motorway. It works well for couples, for small groups and for families, and it is a common component within a longer two-week Morocco itinerary. It is also the most sensible desert route if Fes is your final city.
Erg Chebbi and why the second night matters
Erg Chebbi is the dune field near Merzouga: around 28 kilometres long, reachable by road, and easier to include in a one-way route than Erg Chigaga. Because access is straightforward, the difference between a good and an average desert experience here comes down to time. A single night means arrival and departure. Two nights give you a full day among fossil beds, oases, music and the changing surfaces of the region.
How it can be customised
Run it in reverse from Fes; add a night in Skoura or Aït Ben Haddou to soften Day 1; extend the Sahara to three nights; add Volubilis and Meknes before arriving in Fes; combine with Chefchaouen afterwards.
