A private seven-day journey that begins on foot in the High Atlas, crosses the quieter Anti-Atlas through Aït Kine and Tata, and ends with two nights among the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga.
Some Sahara journeys are about reaching the dunes as quickly as possible. This one is about everything that happens before and after them.
This private Erg Chigaga desert tour begins on foot in the High Atlas, crosses the historic Tizi n’Test route toward Taroudant, continues through the quieter Anti-Atlas landscapes of Igherm, Aït Kine and Tata, and then leaves the paved road behind for the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga.
The result is a seven-day journey connecting three very different Moroccos: mountain villages and walking trails, the oasis and granary culture of the deep south, and the open Sahara beyond Foum Zguid.
A second night at Erg Chigaga is intentional. Rather than arriving for sunset and leaving after breakfast, you have a complete desert day to slow down, walk the dunes, explore by 4x4, ride camels if you wish, or simply experience the silence and scale of the Sahara.
This is not a technical trekking expedition. The walking can be adapted to your fitness and interests, while the journey remains private throughout with an experienced driver and local mountain or desert guides where appropriate.

Day by day
Day 1
Marrakech to Imlil — walk into the High Atlas
Leave Marrakech with your private driver as the city gives way to walnut groves, terraced fields and Amazigh villages. At Imlil, around 1,800 metres, meet your local mountain guide for a walk adapted to your fitness and the season, with time to understand irrigation, agriculture and everyday valley life. A local lunch can be arranged before returning to your mountain guesthouse. Overnight in Imlil / High Atlas.
Day 2
Imlil, Tinmel region, Tizi n’Test and Taroudant
Travel through the western High Atlas toward the historic Tinmel area, then cross Tizi n’Test, one of Morocco’s classic mountain passes, with high valleys opening toward the Souss plain. Descend to Taroudant, an old walled market town, for a late afternoon around its ramparts, medina and souks. Any visit to Tinmel Mosque depends on current restoration and access conditions. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 3
Taroudant, Igherm, Aït Kine and Tata
Leave the Souss plain for the Anti-Atlas, where the landscape becomes drier, rockier and far less visited. Travel through Igherm with scenic stops and, where appropriate, verified prehistoric rock-engraving sites. At Aït Kine, learn with local context how one of southern Morocco’s remarkable communal granaries protected grain, valuables and documents. Descend later toward the oasis town of Tata. Overnight in Tata.
Day 4
Tata, Foum Zguid and off-road to Erg Chigaga
Discover Tata’s oasis environment before continuing east to Foum Zguid, where the paved road ends and the Sahara section begins. Continue by 4x4 across stone desert, dry lake landscapes and increasingly sandy terrain toward the Iriki region and the great dunes. Arrive in late afternoon: a camel ride can be arranged for sunset, or you may reach camp by 4x4 and explore the dunes on foot. Overnight at an Erg Chigaga desert camp.
Day 5
A full day at Erg Chigaga
Wake early if you would like to watch first light move across the dunes. Today deliberately contains no major road transfer. Depending on your interests and conditions, walk among the dunes, explore the wider desert by 4x4, take another optional camel ride, learn about the desert environment or simply enjoy time at camp. Where genuine and respectfully arranged, encounters with local or nomadic families may be possible, but they are never guaranteed. Overnight at the desert camp.
Day 6
Erg Chigaga, M’Hamid, Tamegroute, Draa Valley and Aït Ben Haddou
Cross the desert by 4x4 toward M’Hamid and reconnect with the paved road. Continue through the Draa Valley to Tamegroute, historically known for religious scholarship, manuscripts and green-glazed pottery, visited according to current access conditions. Follow the palm-filled valley north through the Zagora region toward Ouarzazate. Overnight in a character kasbah or guesthouse in the Aït Ben Haddou / Tamedaght area.
Day 7
Aït Ben Haddou, Ounila Valley, Telouet and Marrakech
Begin with Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village whose earthen architecture reflects centuries of life along former caravan routes. Continue through the Ounila Valley past earthen villages and dramatic mountain landscapes, stopping at Telouet Kasbah to learn about the Glaoui family and its complicated political history. Cross Tizi n’Tichka and descend to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
