Morocco Sahara Desert Tour: 10-Day Private Journey from Marrakech
A ten-day southern Morocco journey pairing Erg Chigaga’s remote dunes with Draa oases, Anti-Atlas roads and Atlantic cliffs.
This ten-day private journey places the Sahara inside the wider south. It begins in Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley, reaches the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, then keeps going west — across the Iriqui lake bed to Taroudant, and on to the Atlantic cliffs at Legzira and Sidi Ifni before returning over the mountains by the Tizi n'Test.
The logic of the route is that it never doubles back. Most Sahara itineraries from Marrakech drive south to the dunes and retrace the same road home. Here the desert is a passage rather than a destination: you enter it from the Draa palm groves and leave it on the western side, emerging into argan country and then the ocean. Very few travellers make this crossing, and the roads between Foum Zguid and Tazenakht are quiet almost the entire way.
Erg Chigaga itself is the largest and least developed of Morocco's sand seas, reached only by 4x4 across roughly a hundred kilometres of open desert beyond the end of the sealed road at M'Hamid. A full day is kept there so the dunes are experienced rather than merely visited: sunrise, the far side of the erg, wells and oases at the desert margin, and a second evening of complete silence.
The Atlantic section that follows is a deliberate contrast. Legzira's red cliffs and remaining sandstone arch, the Spanish art deco of Sidi Ifni and the empty beaches between them belong to a completely different Morocco, and arriving there straight from the desert is the reason this itinerary works.
Two days involve five to six hours of driving; the rest are moderate. Everything is private, camel riding at the dunes is optional with a 4x4 alternative, and the itinerary is a starting point rather than a fixed package — it extends naturally to Essaouira, or shortens if your dates are tighter.
The journey is adapted to your dates, pace, interests and preferred level of accommodation.

Day by day
Day by day
Day 1
Arrive in Marrakech
Private airport welcome and transfer to your riad inside the medina. Depending on your arrival time, an orientation walk toward Jemaa el-Fna as the square shifts into the evening, or simply rest in a courtyard. Your driver confirms the following days with you. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 2
Marrakech with a licensed local guide
A full guided day: the Bahia Palace and its painted cedar ceilings, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia area and the souks organised by trade — dyers, brass, leather, carpets. Your guide gives context rather than a shopping circuit, and the emphasis can shift toward gardens, architecture or food according to your interests. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 3
Marrakech to the Draa Valley
Climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, with walnut villages on the slopes and long views back over the Haouz plain. Visit Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar above the Ounila river, ideally with a guide from the village. Continue past Ouarzazate and over the Tizi n'Tinififft into the Draa, where kilometre after kilometre of palm grove follows the river between black hills. Overnight in the Zagora or Draa Valley area.
Day 4
Tamegroute, M'Hamid and the crossing to Erg Chigaga
Continue south to Tamegroute for its green-glazed pottery workshops and historic Quranic library, then past the Tinfou dunes to M'Hamid, where the tarmac ends. From here it is around two hours by 4x4 across hamada, dry riverbeds and open sand to Erg Chigaga. Arrive in the late afternoon, climb a dune for sunset — on foot, by camel or by vehicle, as you prefer — then dinner, fire and music at a private ensuite camp. Overnight in the Sahara.
Day 5
A full day at Erg Chigaga
Sunrise over the erg, then a day given to the desert itself: a 4x4 circuit to the far side of the dune ridge, the Iriqui lake bed, wells and small oases at the margin, and the changing surfaces beyond the sand. Where genuinely and respectfully arranged, there may be an opportunity to take tea with a nomadic family — never staged or guaranteed. Afternoon free for sandboarding, walking or rest. Overnight in the Sahara.
Day 6
Erg Chigaga to Taroudant across the Iriqui
Rather than retracing the Draa, head west across the Iriqui basin toward Foum Zguid — a long, empty and memorable crossing. Continue through Tazenakht, known for its Ouzguita carpets, and down into the Souss Valley. Taroudant is a market town enclosed by earthen ramparts, unhurried and often described as Marrakech before the crowds. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 7
Taroudant to the southern coast
Travel west through argan groves and the Massa region toward the Atlantic, then south past Tiznit — a town with a long silversmithing tradition and a fine jewellery souk — to the coast. The cliffs south of Mirleft begin here, with fishing coves below and almost no development on the shoreline. Overnight near Legzira or Mirleft.
Day 8
Legzira and Sidi Ifni
A day on foot and along the cliffs. Legzira's remaining natural sandstone arch — one of the two originals collapsed in 2016 — stands over the beach and is best seen at low tide and in the evening, when the rock turns deep red. Sidi Ifni, a short drive south, is a curiosity: blue and white Spanish art deco above the ocean, remaining under Spanish administration until 1969. Overnight on the coast.
Day 9
The coast to Marrakech over the Tizi n'Test
Turn inland and return north over the Tizi n'Test, a narrow and spectacular High Atlas road far less travelled than the Tichka. Depending on conditions and season, there may be time at the twelfth-century Tin Mal Mosque, subject to current access. Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 10
Departure
A final morning in the medina and a private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport, or the start of an extension to Essaouira and the Atlantic coast.
At a glance
10 days / 9 nights, starting and finishing in Marrakech. Route: Marrakech (2 nights) → Tizi n'Tichka and Aït Ben Haddou → Draa Valley → Tamegroute and M'Hamid → Erg Chigaga (2 nights) → Iriqui and Foum Zguid → Taroudant → Tiznit → Legzira and Sidi Ifni → Tizi n'Test → Marrakech. Two long driving days; the rest moderate.
Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi?
Erg Chigaga is larger, remoter and reachable only by 4x4, which keeps camps widely spread and visitor numbers low. Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is easier to reach and better suited to routes continuing toward Fes. Neither is superior; they suit different trips. This itinerary uses Chigaga because the westward exit across the Iriqui is only possible from there.
Who it suits
Travellers who want landscape and distance rather than a monument checklist, and who like the idea of a route that never repeats a road. It works well for couples, photographers, small private groups and returning visitors. Guests with back problems or motion sensitivity should tell us early so the 4x4 stages and the Tizi n'Test can be paced accordingly.
Seasons and pacing
October to April is the most comfortable window; in summer we shift departures earlier and adjust the desert days. Desert nights are cold from November to February and camps provide heavy blankets. The Tizi n'Test can be affected by winter weather, in which case we return via the Tichka instead. Any stage can be softened with an additional overnight — Taroudant and the coast are the usual choices.
Accommodation style
A riad inside the Marrakech medina, a kasbah or guesthouse in the Draa Valley, a private ensuite camp at Erg Chigaga, a garden property in Taroudant and a small coastal hotel in the south. We choose for location, character and service rather than star ratings; named properties are proposed with your quotation once dates and comfort level are confirmed.
What can be included
Depending on your confirmed personalised proposal: private air-conditioned vehicle and experienced English-speaking driver throughout, all 4x4 desert transfers, accommodation with daily breakfast, selected dinners, two nights at a private ensuite Sahara camp with dinner and breakfast, a licensed guide in Marrakech and at Aït Ben Haddou, the optional camel ride with 4x4 alternative, bottled water in the vehicle, fuel, tolls and parking, airport transfers and Morocco Shiny Days assistance. Final inclusions are always set out in your personalised quotation.
Ten days from Marrakech to the dunes and out to the ocean.
This is a starting point, not a fixed package. Send us your dates, group size and preferred level of comfort in the desert, and we will shape the route — including an Essaouira extension — around you.
