Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour: 4-Day Private Sahara Journey
The road from Fes to Marrakech does not have to be a transfer. Done properly, it becomes one of Morocco's great journeys.
The road from Fes to Marrakech does not have to be a transfer. Done properly, it becomes one of Morocco's great journeys. This private four-day route connects the two imperial cities through the Middle Atlas, Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge, Skoura Oasis, Aït Ben Haddou and the High Atlas.
The difference is the pacing: two Sahara nights. The first is the arrival, optional sunset camel ride and camp; the second day is for the desert itself—4x4 circuit, Khamlia and Gnawa music, desert landscapes, fossils and local medfouna lunch where arranged.
Continue via Todra to quieter Skoura rather than a standard Dades overnight, then Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou, Ounila Valley, Telouet and Marrakech. Private English-speaking driver and flexible stops.
Highlights
- Two Sahara nights
- Middle Atlas-to-Sahara landscape transition
- Full Erg Chebbi circuit
- Skoura rather than standard Dades overnight
- Ounila Valley finale
Day by day
Day 1
Fes, Middle Atlas, Ziz Valley & Erg Chebbi
Early departure south. Stop Ifrane, continue through cedar country near Azrou; observe macaques respectfully only if visible, never feed or disturb. Lunch around Midelt/Zaida. Descend through Ziz Valley palms and fortified villages. Reach Merzouga late afternoon. Optional camel ride into Erg Chebbi for sunset while luggage travels by 4x4; non-riders go comfortably by 4x4. Private ensuite tent, dinner, fire, traditional music and stars. Overnight Erg Chebbi camp; dinner included.
Day 2
Erg Chebbi: Desert Circuit, Khamlia, Local Life & Medfouna
Optional sunrise, breakfast, then a full desert day instead of another long drive. 4x4 circuit may include tracks, fossil areas and viewpoints. Visit Khamlia for Gnawa music with cultural context. Tea with local/nomadic families only where genuinely and respectfully arranged; never staged or guaranteed. Local medfouna lunch where included, possibly seeing part of preparation. Afternoon for sandboarding, walking, relaxing and changing light. Second Sahara evening. Overnight Erg Chebbi/Merzouga; dinner included. Two nights matter because one night gives you the visual experience of arriving by camel and sleeping in the dunes, while a second night gives you time to understand the region around them.
Day 3
Merzouga, Todra Gorge, Valley of Roses & Skoura
Travel west to Tinghir and walk the dramatic Todra Gorge. Continue through Dades and Valley of Roses, noting roses are seasonal, mainly spring. Continue to Skoura Oasis with palms, earthen kasbahs, gardens and irrigation channels. Relax or short palm walk depending on arrival. Overnight Skoura; dinner typically included only depending on final proposal.
Day 4
Skoura, Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou, Ounila Valley, Telouet & Marrakech
Travel via Ouarzazate to Aït Ben Haddou. Explore the UNESCO-listed ksar with a local guide, with earthen architecture, community history and caravan-route context. Continue through Ounila Valley to Telouet. Visit Telouet Kasbah only according to current access conditions; learn about Glaoui history. Cross Tizi n'Tichka and arrive Marrakech late afternoon/early evening, transfer to riad/hotel.
