5-Day Desert Tour to Erg Chigaga from Marrakech
A private southern route to Morocco’s wild Erg Chigaga dunes through the Draa Valley, Zagora and M’hamid.
Five days is the length at which a journey to Erg Chigaga stops feeling like a dash to the dunes and starts feeling like travel through southern Morocco. The extra time is spent where it matters: two nights in the Sahara instead of one, and a proper stop in the Draa Valley and around Ouarzazate rather than a single long transfer in each direction.
The route leaves Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, takes in Aït Ben Haddou and the film-studio city of Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa Valley south through Agdz, Zagora and Tamegroute to M'Hamid, where the sealed road ends. From there a 4x4 crosses roughly a hundred kilometres of open desert to Erg Chigaga, Morocco's largest sand sea.
The second desert day is the one that changes the trip. Instead of packing up at dawn, you explore the wider erg: the long dune ridge itself, the Iriqui lake bed, oases at the desert margin, and nomadic families living in the area where an encounter can be arranged genuinely and respectfully — never staged, never guaranteed. Afternoons are free for sandboarding, walking, or doing nothing at all as the light changes.
The return is unhurried, with an overnight in the southern valleys so the crossing of the High Atlas happens fresh rather than at the end of eight hours of driving. Some travellers use that final night for Skoura's palm grove, others for the Ounila Valley and Telouet.
Everything is private, and camel riding is always optional with a comfortable 4x4 alternative to camp. The itinerary below is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Day by day
Day 1
Marrakech over the High Atlas to the Draa Valley
Leave Marrakech in the morning and climb to the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the highest major road pass in the country. Descend to Aït Ben Haddou and explore the UNESCO-listed ksar with a local guide, then continue past Ouarzazate and over the Tizi n'Tinififft to Agdz, where the Draa Valley palm grove begins. Overnight in a kasbah or guesthouse in the valley.
Day 2
The Draa Valley, M'Hamid and the crossing to Erg Chigaga
Follow the river south past a near-continuous ribbon of palms and earthen ksour. Stop at Tamegroute for its green-glazed pottery workshops and the historic library, and at the Tinfou dunes. Beyond M'Hamid the road ends and a 4x4 takes over for around two hours across hamada, dry riverbeds and open sand to Erg Chigaga. Arrive in time to climb a dune for sunset. Dinner, fire and music at a private ensuite camp. Overnight at Erg Chigaga.
Day 3
A full day in the Sahara
Sunrise over the erg, then a day given entirely to the desert. By 4x4 you can reach the far side of the dune ridge, the Iriqui lake bed, and small oases and wells at the desert margin. Where genuinely and respectfully arranged, there may be an opportunity to share tea with a nomadic family — this is never staged or promised in advance. Afternoons are free for sandboarding, walking the ridge or resting. A second sunset and a second night of complete silence. Overnight at Erg Chigaga.
Day 4
Erg Chigaga to the southern valleys
Leave the dunes after breakfast and recross the desert, either back via M'Hamid or on the western track toward Foum Zguid depending on conditions and your preference. Continue north toward Ouarzazate, with time in the Skoura palm grove or the kasbahs of the Draa depending on the route taken. Overnight in the southern valleys.
Day 5
Return to Marrakech
A shorter final day. Depending on your interest, take the older road through Telouet and the Ounila Valley or the main pass, both crossing the High Atlas with long views over the southern slopes. Arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon, or continue to the airport if you are flying out the same day.

Why two nights in the desert
One night gives you a sunset, a dinner and a sunrise, and most of the following morning is spent driving away. Two nights give you a whole day in the erg, which is when the desert stops being a photograph and becomes a place: different surfaces, distances, wind, wells, and how people actually live at the margin of it.
Who it suits
Travellers who want the Sahara as the centre of their trip rather than a detour, and who prefer a route without exhausting drive days. It suits couples, photographers, families with children of most ages, and small private groups. Guests with back problems or motion sensitivity should tell us early so the 4x4 stages can be paced accordingly.
How it can be customised
Return via Foum Zguid and the Anti-Atlas instead of retracing the Draa; add a night in Skoura or Aït Ben Haddou; add a walking day in the High Atlas at the end; upgrade to a more private desert camp; combine with the Atlantic coast after Marrakech. Camel riding is optional at every point and can be replaced by 4x4.
