Southern Morocco Photography Journey: 15 Days Through the Coast, Anti-Atlas & Sahara
A private 15-day route from the Atlantic coast into the High Atlas, through the granite landscapes of Tafraout and the Anti-Atlas, across remote villages and fortified granaries, and finally into the great dunes of Erg Chigaga.
Morocco rewards anyone who travels with a camera, but some of its most memorable images are found far beyond the classic imperial-city circuit.
This Morocco Photography Tour follows a 15-day route from the Atlantic coast into the High Atlas, through the granite landscapes of Tafraout and the Anti-Atlas, across remote villages and fortified granaries, and finally into the great dunes of Erg Chigaga before returning to Marrakech.
The emphasis is on places, light and landscape rather than photography instruction. There is no workshop and no professional photographer leading the trip. Instead, you travel privately with an experienced Morocco Shiny Days driver, giving you the flexibility to stop when the landscape changes, linger when the light is good, and reach places that standard group itineraries rarely include.
Along the way, the visual character of Morocco changes constantly: Atlantic ramparts, argan country, mountain passes, sculpted granite, palm oases, earthen villages, ancient granaries, desert plateaus, the Draa Valley and the vast Sahara.

Day by day
Day 1
Casablanca to El Jadida
Meet your private driver on arrival in Casablanca and begin the journey south along the Atlantic coast. Depending on your arrival time, stop in Azemmour before continuing to El Jadida. The Portuguese City offers one of the most distinctive architectural settings on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, with stone ramparts, narrow lanes and ocean light that changes dramatically toward evening. Settle into your accommodation and explore at an easy pace. Photography focus: Atlantic architecture, ramparts, late-afternoon coastal light. Overnight in El Jadida.
Day 2
El Jadida, Oualidia, Safi & Essaouira
Follow the Atlantic south through lagoons, coastal farmland and fishing communities. Pause around Oualidia, where the protected lagoon creates a softer coastal landscape, before continuing toward Safi, known for its pottery traditions and working port. Reach Essaouira in the afternoon. The whitewashed medina, ochre ramparts, blue fishing boats and changing Atlantic weather make this one of Morocco’s most naturally photogenic towns. Photography focus: lagoon landscapes, pottery, fishing harbors, Atlantic light. Overnight in Essaouira.
Day 3
Essaouira at Your Own Pace
Spend a full day photographing Essaouira without the pressure of a long driving schedule. The morning is ideal for the medina before the streets become busier. Later, spend time around the harbor, ramparts and seafront, where fishermen, gulls, boats and the changing tide create constantly shifting scenes. Because this is a private journey, the day can be shaped around the light rather than a fixed sightseeing schedule. Photography focus: medina life, harbor activity, blue boats, ramparts, sunset. Overnight in Essaouira.
Day 4
Essaouira to Marrakech
Leave the Atlantic and travel inland toward Marrakech through argan country. The road itself offers opportunities to photograph rural landscapes and, when naturally encountered, goats climbing argan trees. These should never be staged or forced simply for photographs. Arrive in Marrakech and settle into your riad. Toward evening, explore Jemaa el-Fna as the square changes from daytime market to one of Morocco’s most intense urban scenes. Photography focus: argan landscapes, Marrakech rooftops, Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 5
Marrakech: Architecture, Markets & Street Life
Explore Marrakech with a knowledgeable local guide. Rather than treating the day as a photography workshop, the guide provides cultural context and helps you understand what you are photographing. Visit architectural sites such as Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, then continue through selected areas of the medina and souks. Late afternoon and early evening can be kept flexible for street scenes and changing light. Photography focus: zellij, carved plaster, souks, street life, architecture. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 6
Marrakech, High Atlas, Tizi n’Test & Taroudant
Leave Marrakech and enter the High Atlas. Travel via Asni toward the historic Tinmel area and continue across the dramatic Tizi n’Test route. The road provides changing perspectives over mountain valleys, villages and the Souss plain. Descend toward Taroudant, a walled market town that feels very different from Marrakech despite its historic nickname as a "little Marrakech." Photography focus: mountain villages, High Atlas panoramas, mountain roads, Taroudant walls. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 7
Taroudant to Tafraout via the Anti-Atlas
Today the journey moves into the Anti-Atlas, one of the strongest visual sections of the trip. Travel through Igherm and increasingly rugged mountain scenery toward Tafraout. The landscape is defined by enormous granite formations, dry valleys, argan trees and villages that seem to emerge directly from the rock. Reach Tafraout with time to explore the Ameln Valley and the surrounding granite formations. Photography focus: Anti-Atlas geology, villages, granite formations, Tafraout. Overnight in Tafraout.
Day 8
Tafraout, Ameln Valley & Southern Villages
Spend more time around Tafraout rather than immediately continuing south. Explore the Ameln Valley and surrounding villages, with time for the well-known rock formations around Tafraout. The emphasis should remain on genuine landscapes and local life rather than staged photography. Depending on season and interests, visit local cooperatives or small communities before continuing south. Photography focus: granite towers, argan country, village architecture, mountain light. Overnight in Icht / southern Anti-Atlas region.
Day 9
Amtoudi & the Fortified Granaries
Travel toward Amtoudi, one of the most visually striking villages of the Anti-Atlas. The village sits beneath dramatic cliffs crowned by historic fortified granaries. Walk with a local guide through the gorge and, where access allows, visit one of the agadir granaries above the valley. The day combines architecture, landscape and local history in a region still visited by relatively few international travelers. Photography focus: fortified granaries, canyon walls, palm groves, village life. Overnight in Icht / surrounding region.
Day 10
Icht, Akka, Aït Kine, Tata Region & Foum Zguid
Continue east through southern Morocco toward Tata and Foum Zguid. Stop in oasis landscapes and small settlements along the way. Aït Kine is particularly valuable for its historic communal granary and traditional architecture, offering another perspective on how communities stored grain, documents and valuables. This is a road day, but it is also one of the most rewarding for travelers interested in landscapes rarely included on standard Morocco itineraries. Photography focus: oases, earthen architecture, granaries, empty southern roads. Overnight in Foum Zguid.
Day 11
Foum Zguid to Erg Chigaga
Leave paved roads behind and travel by 4x4 into the Sahara. The route toward Erg Chigaga crosses changing desert surfaces — stone, gravel, dry lake landscapes and sand — before the large dunes finally appear. Arrive with time to experience the dunes toward late afternoon. A camel ride can be arranged, or you may simply explore around the camp and dunes on foot. Photography focus: desert tracks, vast horizons, dunes, sunset, night sky. Overnight in an Erg Chigaga desert camp.
Day 12
Erg Chigaga, M’Hamid, Tamegroute & Zagora
Enjoy a quiet morning around the dunes before leaving the Sahara. Travel toward M’Hamid and reconnect with the paved road. Continue through the Draa Valley to Tamegroute, known for its historic library, religious learning and distinctive green pottery. Reach Zagora later in the day. Photography focus: first light in the dunes, desert tracks, Draa palms, Tamegroute pottery. Overnight in Zagora.
Day 13
Zagora, Tamnougalt, Agdz & Tamedaght
Follow the Draa Valley north. Stop at Tamnougalt, whose earthen kasbah architecture reflects centuries of caravan trade and oasis life. Continue through Agdz and toward Ouarzazate before reaching the Aït Ben Haddou / Tamedaght area. Late afternoon is intentionally valuable here, as the changing light can transform the earthen architecture. Photography focus: Draa Valley, kasbahs, oasis villages, late-afternoon earth tones. Overnight in Tamedaght / Aït Ben Haddou area.
Day 14
Aït Ben Haddou, Ounila Valley, Telouet & Marrakech
Start early to experience Aït Ben Haddou before the heavier daytime crowds and while the light is still soft. After exploring the ksar, continue through the Ounila Valley toward Telouet. This is one of Morocco’s most beautiful mountain roads, with earthen villages, kasbah ruins and terraced valleys appearing around each bend. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka and return to Marrakech. Photography focus: Aït Ben Haddou at first light, Ounila Valley, Telouet, High Atlas. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 15
Departure
Your private driver will transfer you to Marrakech Airport or, if necessary, Casablanca Airport according to your flight schedule. This marks the end of the 15-day "Southern Morocco Photography Journey."

This itinerary can be customized for serious photographers who do not require instruction, hobby photographers, landscape photographers, architecture enthusiasts, couples or friends traveling with cameras, repeat Morocco visitors, travelers interested in the Anti-Atlas and deep south, and those who prefer slower travel with additional nights in Tafraout, Essaouira or the Sahara. If a professional photography workshop is required, Morocco Shiny Days will state clearly that this itinerary does not include one unless a separate specialist is specifically arranged.
