Northern Morocco Tour: 5-Day Private Journey from Tangier

Day by day

1. Day 1

   Tangier, Tetouan & Chefchaouen

   Your Northern Morocco Tour begins with a private pickup from Tangier Airport, port or your accommodation. Leave Tangier and travel toward Tetouan, one of northern Morocco’s most distinctive cities. Tetouan’s medina reflects strong Andalusian influence, shaped by families who arrived from southern Spain over centuries. Whitewashed streets, tiled courtyards, carved doors and Spanish-Moorish architecture give the city a different feel from Fes or Marrakech. Depending on your arrival time and interests, take a guided or introductory walk through the medina before continuing into the Rif Mountains. The road to Chefchaouen becomes increasingly scenic as the mountains rise around you. On arrival, check into your riad inside or near the medina and take time to settle in. The late afternoon and early evening are ideal for exploring Chefchaouen independently. The town is compact enough that a local guide is not essential for most travelers; part of its charm is simply wandering through the blue-painted lanes at your own pace. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

2. Day 2

   Chefchaouen, Volubilis & Fes

   Wake early if you would like to experience Chefchaouen before the daytime visitors arrive. Spend the morning wandering through the medina, around Plaza Uta el-Hammam and toward Ras El Maa. The blue streets are particularly beautiful in the softer morning light. Leave Chefchaouen before midday and travel south through rolling countryside toward Volubilis, Morocco’s most important Roman archaeological site. Accompanied by a local guide, walk among the remains of villas, mosaics, olive presses, the basilica and the triumphal arch while learning how this Roman city fitted into the wider history of northern Morocco. Depending on timing, continue through the Moulay Idriss area and/or the Meknes region before proceeding to Fes. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon or early evening and settle into your riad. Overnight in Fes.

3. Day 3

   Private Guided Tour of Fes

   Today is dedicated to Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and intellectual capital. Meet your licensed English-speaking local guide and begin with a panoramic introduction to the city before entering Fes el-Bali on foot. The medina is one of the world’s great historic urban environments, filled with thousands of narrow lanes, workshops, mosques, madrasas, fountains, markets and traditional homes. Visit carefully selected historic sites such as the Bou Inania Madrasa, artisan quarters, traditional fondouks and the famous leather tanneries. Explore areas connected to metalwork, weaving, woodcarving and ceramics, and understand how many crafts are still practiced using techniques passed down through generations. You will also see the area around Al Quaraouiyine, one of the oldest centers of learning in the world, while your guide explains how scholarship, religion, trade and craftsmanship shaped the city. Where relevant to your interests, the tour can also include the Jewish Mellah and wider heritage around the royal quarter. The goal is not to race through a checklist. Your guide should help make sense of the medina’s structure, history and daily life. Return to your riad in the late afternoon. Dinner can be at your leisure, with restaurant recommendations provided. Overnight in Fes.

4. Day 4

   Fes to Rabat

   After breakfast, leave Fes and travel west toward Rabat, Morocco’s elegant Atlantic capital. If you prefer a slower morning, there can be time for a short final walk or coffee in Fes before departure. For travelers who want a culinary experience, a cooking session can also be added, but it should be treated as optional rather than automatically included in every version of the tour. Arrive in Rabat and begin exploring the city’s major historic areas. Visit the Kasbah of the Oudayas, whose blue-and-white lanes overlook the Bouregreg River and Atlantic Ocean, and walk through the peaceful Andalusian Gardens. Continue to the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, one of Morocco’s most refined examples of modern royal architecture and craftsmanship. If time and interests allow, the day can also include Chellah, whose Roman and medieval remains sit within gardens just outside the modern city. Settle into a riad inside or near the medina. 5. Day 5

   Salé Heritage Experience & Return to Tangier

   Begin the final day across the Bouregreg River in Salé, one of the most distinctive experiences of the route. Meet a local university professor or heritage specialist involved in researching and preserving the historic medina. Rather than a conventional sightseeing tour, this visit focuses on how a Moroccan medina actually developed and functioned. Learn about Salé’s Andalusian communities, scholarship, maritime trade, historic defenses and the seventeenth-century Republic of the Bouregreg. Where access is currently possible, the visit may include historic towers, defensive structures or spaces normally closed to casual visitors. This experience is especially valuable because it adds depth to the journey: after visiting famous cities and monuments, you finish with someone who can explain how history, architecture and community life connect. After the Salé visit, enjoy lunch in the Rabat/Salé area before beginning the drive north toward Tangier. Arrive in Tangier in the late afternoon or early evening, where your driver will drop you at your hotel, port or airport depending on your plans.
