Rather than returning from the Sahara along the same southern roads, the journey continues north from Erg Chebbi through the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas to Fes, crosses the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, reaches Morocco's Atlantic capital in Rabat, and finally completes the circuit back in Marrakech.
Along the way, the route crosses the High Atlas through Telouet and the Ounila Valley, explores the palm oasis of Skoura, reaches the great dunes of Erg Chebbi, spends a full guided day inside Fes, wanders through the blue medina of Chefchaouen and introduces travelers to Rabat before returning south.
This is an active one-week Morocco itinerary. There are substantial driving stages, but the road itself is an essential part of the experience: mountains, kasbahs, oases, desert, cedar forests, medieval cities and changing landscapes. Your 7-Day Morocco Itinerary from Marrakech
The route below is our recommended starting point. Because every departure is private, accommodations, experiences and individual stops can be adapted before travel.
Day 1
Marrakech → High Atlas → Telouet → Ounila Valley → Aït Ben Haddou → Skoura
Your private Morocco journey begins with pickup from Marrakech Menara Airport or your accommodation in Marrakech. Leave the city and climb into the High Atlas Mountains. Rather than treating the first day simply as a transfer toward the Sahara, we use the journey itself as part of the experience. Leave the main road toward Telouet and explore the historic Telouet Kasbah, once associated with the powerful Glaoui family and the old caravan routes across the Atlas. Continue through the spectacular Ounila Valley, passing earthen villages, mountain scenery and the landscapes that historically connected Telouet with Aït Ben Haddou. Where timing and conditions allow, incorporate the traditional salt-producing area into the route. Continue to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco's most celebrated examples of southern earthen architecture. After exploring the ksar, continue through Ouarzazate toward Skoura. The day ends inside the enormous Skoura palm oasis, where kasbahs, gardens and villages remain hidden among thousands of date palms. Dinner and overnight in Skoura.
Day 2
Skoura → Kasbah Amridil → Valley of Roses → Todra Gorge → Merzouga / Erg Chebbi
Begin the morning exploring Skoura. Visit the historic Kasbah Amridil with a local guide and learn about traditional kasbah architecture, oasis agriculture and life within Morocco's southern palm groves. Continue east through the Valley of Roses and the landscapes surrounding Boumalne Dades. Travel toward Tinghir and stop at the spectacular Todra Gorge, where towering limestone walls rise above the river and palm oasis. Continue through the pre-Saharan landscape toward Erfoud and Rissani before reaching Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Late in the afternoon, exchange the 4x4 for camels and travel into the dunes, timing the experience around sunset whenever possible. Camel riding is always optional; travelers who prefer not to ride can reach the camp privately by 4x4. Arrive for dinner, traditional music around the campfire when conditions allow, and time beneath the Sahara stars. Dinner and overnight in a private en-suite desert camp at Erg Chebbi.
Day 3
Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Middle Atlas → Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fes
Wake early if you would like to see sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast. Today is one of the longer road stages, but it also reveals one of Morocco's most extraordinary changes of landscape. Leave the Sahara and travel north through the Tafilalt toward the Ziz Valley, stopping at a panoramic viewpoint over the immense ribbon of date palms. Continue toward Midelt and climb into the Middle Atlas. The desert gradually disappears as the road reaches cedar country, where Barbary macaques can often be seen. Continue through Ifrane, known for its alpine-style architecture and very different atmosphere from Morocco's ancient cities and desert towns. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon or evening and settle into your riad. Overnight in Fes.
Day 4
Fes — Private Guided Medina & Cultural Tour
Today there is no long-distance driving. Spend a full day discovering Fes with a knowledgeable licensed local guide. Fes el-Bali is one of the world's great historic urban landscapes and is best understood with someone who knows the medina beyond its principal monuments. Explore its maze of lanes, historic madrasas, artisan quarters, traditional fondouks, food markets, communal bakeries, workshops and famous tanneries. Learn how the old city developed around its neighbourhoods, mosques, fountains, hammams and trades, and meet craftspeople who continue traditions passed through generations. Where appropriate, the experience can incorporate local food tastings and other encounters according to guests' interests. Return to your riad with the evening free. Second overnight in Fes.
Day 5
Fes → Chefchaouen
After breakfast, leave Fes and travel north toward the Rif Mountains. The landscape changes again as the road climbs into the greener mountains surrounding Chefchaouen. Arrive in the blue city with enough time to begin discovering its compact medina at an unhurried pace. Walk through blue-painted lanes and small squares, explore artisan shops, reach the kasbah and main square, or simply wander without a checklist. Chefchaouen is particularly rewarding in the later afternoon as day visitors begin leaving and the medina becomes quieter. Those who enjoy walking can discuss additional viewpoints or a short walk above town depending on arrival time and energy. Overnight in Chefchaouen.
Day 6
Chefchaouen → Rabat
Enjoy breakfast and some additional time in Chefchaouen before leaving the Rif Mountains. Travel southwest toward Morocco's Atlantic coast and the capital, Rabat. Rabat feels very different from both Fes and Marrakech: spacious, coastal and considerably quieter. Depending on arrival time, begin exploring landmarks such as Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas overlooking the Bouregreg River. Where timing permits and according to the customized itinerary, the experience can also incorporate neighbouring Salé, a historic city that receives a fraction of Rabat's international visitors. Settle into your accommodation for the final evening. Overnight in Rabat.
Day 7
Rabat → Marrakech
Enjoy breakfast before completing the Marrakech-to-Marrakech circuit. If sightseeing time remains in Rabat, the morning can be adjusted around what was covered the previous afternoon. Then travel south via the motorway toward Marrakech. Drop-off can be arranged directly at your Marrakech accommodation or Marrakech Menara Airport depending on your onward plans. The seven-day journey ends back where it began — after crossing the High Atlas, southern oases, Sahara Desert, Middle Atlas, Fes, Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen and Morocco's Atlantic capital.

This is one of our more active Morocco itineraries. Combining Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes, Chefchaouen and Rabat within seven days necessarily involves several substantial road journeys. We recommend it specifically to travelers who value seeing very different parts of Morocco and genuinely enjoy the road-trip element. The journey remains private, allowing stops and timing to be adjusted, but travelers seeking a slower pace should add additional nights.

It is designed for travelers who arrive in Marrakech before the private circuit, already know the city, or plan to stay independently afterward. Want more time in the Sahara?
The standard itinerary includes one night at Erg Chebbi. For a deeper desert experience, we strongly recommend adding a second night rather than forcing more into the seven-day circuit. The additional day can include private 4x4 exploration around Erg Chebbi, time with nomadic families and desert communities where appropriate, local music, a Berber-family lunch or medfouna experience, and unhurried time among the dunes.
Accommodation style
We generally favour a character kasbah or oasis lodge in Skoura, a private en-suite desert tent at Erg Chebbi, a traditional riad inside or close to the historic Fes medina, an intimate riad or character guesthouse in Chefchaouen, and a boutique riad or carefully selected hotel in Rabat. Exact properties depend on dates, availability, budget and preferred comfort level.
Private transport throughout
This is a private road journey. For smaller parties, Morocco Shiny Days can use a comfortable 4x4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser, particularly suited to our preferred back-road approach in southern Morocco. Vehicle choice depends on group size and the final itinerary. An experienced English-speaking driver accompanies the journey throughout; specialist licensed or local guides join where appropriate.
