Agadir & Western Sahara Tour: 9-Day Private Journey
An adventurous private journey beyond the familiar coast to Massa, Guelmim, Plage Blanche, Mirleft and the Anti-Atlas.
This nine-day private route travels the deep south of Morocco's Atlantic: from Agadir through the wetlands of Souss-Massa, down past Tiznit and Guelmim to Fort Bou Jerif and the immense empty shoreline of Plage Blanche, back up the cliffs through Sidi Ifni and Mirleft, then inland to the granite valleys of Tafraoute and the walled market town of Taroudant.
It is the least conventional journey we operate on the coast. There are no medinas on the scale of Fes and almost no organised visitor infrastructure once you pass Guelmim. The interest lies in the transition: argan country gives way to the stony Anti-Atlas foothills, then to genuine desert, and finally to a shoreline where dunes reach the sand and the horizon is empty in both directions.
Plage Blanche is the centrepiece — around forty kilometres of pale, almost entirely undeveloped beach reached across open country from Tafnidilt. Fort Bou Jerif, a ruined French colonial outpost near the Assaka river, is the base for it, and the drive there is as much of the experience as the arrival.
The inland second half is a complete change of register. Tafraoute sits in a bowl of pink granite in the Anti-Atlas, surrounded by Ameln Valley villages, almond groves and boulder fields; Taroudant, behind its earthen walls in the Souss, is unhurried and entirely uncommercial by Moroccan standards.
Some days involve four to five hours of driving and a few sections are on rough tracks best handled by 4x4. Accommodation in the far south is simple and clean rather than boutique, because nothing else exists there. For travellers who value emptiness, little else in Morocco compares. The itinerary below is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Day 1
Agadir to Massa
A gentle start on the coast. From Agadir — rebuilt entirely after the 1960 earthquake, so its appeal is the bay rather than any old quarter — travel a short distance south to the Souss-Massa area and settle in near the park. The afternoon is for the beach, the river mouth or simply arriving at the pace the rest of the route will require. Overnight near Massa.
Day 2
Souss-Massa National Park
A full day in the park, where the Massa river meets the Atlantic behind a sand bar, creating reed beds, lagoons and dunes. It is one of the last places the northern bald ibis breeds in the wild, and from autumn to spring flamingos, spoonbills and waders gather in numbers; nothing is guaranteed, but the walking and the light are reliable. Small agricultural villages line the valley inland. Overnight near Massa.
Day 3
Massa to Fort Bou Jerif
Travel south through Tiznit, a walled town with a long silversmithing tradition and a jewellery souk worth an hour, then inland to Guelmim, historically a caravan crossroads and still a market town where camels are traded on Saturdays. Beyond it the landscape becomes properly arid. Continue on rough tracks to Fort Bou Jerif, a ruined French colonial outpost near the Assaka river with a simple camp beside it. Overnight at Fort Bou Jerif.
Day 4
Plage Blanche
Cross extraordinary open country to Tafnidilt and out to Plage Blanche, some forty kilometres of pale, almost undeveloped beach where the desert meets the ocean directly. There is nothing here but sand, cliffs, surf and occasional fishermen — which is precisely the point. Time to walk, and to sit with a horizon that has nothing in it. Overnight at Fort Bou Jerif or Tafnidilt.
Day 5
North along the coast to Mirleft
Return up the coast via Sidi Ifni, a town of blue and white Spanish art deco buildings above the ocean that remained under Spanish administration until 1969, with an old administrative quarter and a cliff-top promenade. Continue to Legzira, where the remaining natural sandstone arch stands over the beach — best at low tide and in evening light — and on to the small cliff-top village of Mirleft. Overnight in Mirleft.
Day 6
Mirleft to Tafraoute
Turn inland and climb into the Anti-Atlas. The landscape changes to pink and grey granite, boulder fields, terraced almond groves and villages built into the rock. Tafraoute sits in a bowl beneath the Ameln Valley; late afternoon light on the surrounding stone is the reason photographers keep returning. Overnight in Tafraoute.
Day 7
Tafraoute to Taroudant
A scenic mountain morning through the Ameln Valley and the Anti-Atlas passes, with argan and almond terraces and small settlements along the way, before descending into the Souss Valley. Taroudant is enclosed by nearly six kilometres of earthen ramparts, with an unhurried souk and a working market at its centre. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 8
Taroudant and the surrounding villages
A relaxed day. Walk or cycle the circuit of the ramparts, spend time in the two main souks — one for spices and produce, one for craft — and visit Amazigh villages and argan cooperatives in the surrounding Souss countryside. The pace here is deliberately slower after several days of distance. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 9
Taroudant to Agadir
A short final drive back through the Souss to Agadir for your flight or onward stay, or the start of an extension north to Essaouira or inland to Marrakech.

Who it suits
Experienced travellers, photographers, birdwatchers and returning visitors who want a part of Morocco almost nobody sees. It is not a first-time Morocco itinerary and not suited to travellers who need consistently high-end hotels or a varied programme every day. If long empty roads and a genuinely remote coast appeal to you, this is the route.
Practical realities
Between Guelmim and the coast there are stretches of rough track where a 4x4 is the right vehicle, and services — fuel, food, accommodation — are sparse. Days are planned around what actually exists rather than around ideal stops. Accommodation at Fort Bou Jerif and Tafnidilt is simple: clean, well run and characterful, but not boutique. Bring your passport and copies; there are routine police checkpoints in the far south, which your driver handles.
How it can be customised
Shorten to six or seven days by removing the Tafraoute leg or one Taroudant night; extend further south toward Tan-Tan and the desert coast; add Essaouira or Marrakech at either end; include guided birdwatching in Souss-Massa or walking days in the Ameln Valley.
