Southern Morocco Coastal Tour: 5 Days, Marrakech to Mirleft
A five-day private escape through Agadir, Massa, Mirleft, Legzira and Taroudant, returning over Tizi n’Test.
South of Agadir the Atlantic gets emptier, warmer and considerably more dramatic. This five-day private circuit runs from Marrakech down to the coast at Agadir, through the wetlands of Souss-Massa, along the cliffs to Mirleft, Legzira and Sidi Ifni, then inland to the walled market town of Taroudant and back over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Test.
It is the shortest of our routes that still feels like real travel rather than a beach transfer. There is no imperial city and very little formal sightseeing. What there is instead: long shorelines without buildings, fishing coves at the base of red cliffs, goats in argan trees, the faded Spanish art deco of Sidi Ifni, and one of the most spectacular mountain roads in North Africa on the way home.
Souss-Massa, on the second day, is a national park where the Massa river meets the ocean behind a sand bar. It is one of the last places the northern bald ibis breeds in the wild, and outside the summer months the wetlands hold flamingos, spoonbills and waders. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the landscape alone justifies the stop.
Legzira deserves a specific note. It was long known for two natural sandstone arches; one collapsed in 2016. The remaining arch is still striking at low tide and in evening light, and we plan the visit around the tide table rather than describing the beach as older photographs show it.
Driving is moderate throughout, with the longest stage on the final day over the Tizi n'Test. Everything is private and the pace is adjustable — this route in particular rewards an extra night at Mirleft. The itinerary below is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Day by day
Day 1
Marrakech to Agadir
Travel west and south from Marrakech across the argan plateau, a landscape of low thorny trees, goats and pressing cooperatives, then down into the Souss Valley and out to the coast. Agadir was rebuilt entirely after the 1960 earthquake, so its interest is the bay, the long beach and the kasbah hill above the port rather than any historic quarter. Arrive with the afternoon free for the ocean. Overnight in Agadir.
Day 2
Souss-Massa and south to Mirleft
A morning in Souss-Massa National Park, where the river meets the Atlantic behind a sand bar and the reed beds and dunes attract flamingos, spoonbills and migratory waders outside summer. The park is also one of the last strongholds of the northern bald ibis; sightings are a matter of luck rather than a promise. Continue south past Tiznit, a walled town with a long silversmithing tradition, and on to Mirleft on the cliffs. Overnight in Mirleft.
Day 3
Legzira, Sidi Ifni and the cliffs
A day without long driving. Legzira's red sandstone cliffs and remaining natural arch are best at low tide, when you can walk a long way along the beach beneath them; late afternoon light turns the rock deep red. Sidi Ifni, a short drive south, remained under Spanish administration until 1969, and its blue and white art deco buildings, old administrative quarter and cliff-top promenade are unlike anywhere else in Morocco. Overnight in Mirleft.
Day 4
Mirleft to Taroudant
Turn inland through argan groves and the low hills of the western Anti-Atlas, with the landscape drying out and opening as you leave the coast. Taroudant sits in the Souss Valley behind almost six kilometres of earthen ramparts, with an unhurried souk, a working market and clear views south to the Anti-Atlas. A slow walk of the walls at the end of the day is the best way to see them. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 5
Taroudant to Marrakech over the Tizi n'Test
The scenic return. The Tizi n'Test is a narrow, spectacular High Atlas road, far less travelled than the Tichka, climbing to just over 2,000 metres with long views back over the Souss. Subject to current access, there may be time at the twelfth-century Tin Mal Mosque, one of the very few historic mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. Descend to Marrakech in the afternoon. In poor winter weather we return via Agadir and the motorway instead.

Who it suits
Travellers who want ocean air and empty landscapes after the intensity of Marrakech, and who would rather spend an afternoon on a cliff path than in a museum. It works well for couples, walkers, photographers, birdwatchers and families with children old enough for the mountain road. It also pairs neatly onto the end of an inland or Sahara itinerary.
Seasons and conditions
The southern Atlantic is mild all year and usually warmer and less windy than Essaouira. Souss-Massa is at its best from autumn to spring for birdlife. Legzira is tide-dependent, so we plan the visit around the tide table for your dates. The Tizi n'Test can close briefly in winter weather, in which case the return runs via Agadir.
How it can be customised
Add a night in Sidi Ifni or an extra day in Mirleft for a genuinely slow finish; include Tafraoute and the Ameln Valley in the Anti-Atlas; add surf lessons at Taghazout or a coastal walking day; start or finish at Agadir airport; extend north to Essaouira instead of returning directly.
