Northern Morocco Coastal Tour: 4 Days, Marrakech to Casablanca
An elegant Atlantic route through Essaouira, Oualidia and El Jadida, finishing naturally in Casablanca.
Most visitors experience Morocco's Atlantic only at Essaouira. This four-day private route continues north from there along a shoreline that very few itineraries include: the oyster lagoon at Oualidia, the Portuguese cistern at El Jadida, and the art deco boulevards of Casablanca, with the ocean in view for almost the entire journey.
It begins in Marrakech and crosses the argan plateau to the coast, where the temperature drops noticeably and the wind picks up. Essaouira's fortified medina — laid out in the eighteenth century with the help of a European engineer and still enclosed by its ramparts — is a genuinely relaxed town: a working fishing port, a long beach, woodworkers in the arcades and gulls over the skala.
Heading north the coast changes character. The road passes long empty beaches and small fishing villages before reaching Oualidia, where a natural lagoon sheltered behind a rock bar produces most of Morocco's oysters and creates one of the only safe swimming beaches on this stretch of Atlantic. El Jadida, further north, was a Portuguese stronghold; its underground vaulted cistern, with a thin film of water reflecting the arches, is one of the most atmospheric spaces in the country.
Casablanca closes the route. It is not a monumental city, but it is the real economic and architectural centre of modern Morocco, and the combination of the Hassan II Mosque on its ocean platform with the 1930s buildings of the centre gives a very different picture of the country from the medinas inland.
The driving is easy throughout — no stage exceeds around three hours — which makes this a good route to place at the end of a longer journey, or to slow down further with an extra night at any point. Every itinerary we show is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Day by day
Day 1
Marrakech to Essaouira
Leave Marrakech and cross the argan plateau west, a landscape of low thorny trees, goats and cooperatives where argan oil is still pressed by hand. The air changes about twenty minutes before you see the ocean. Arrive in Essaouira around midday and walk into the medina: the skala ramparts, the port with its blue boats and the arcaded streets of the woodworkers. The afternoon is free, and the beach runs for kilometres south of the town. Overnight in Essaouira.
Day 2
Essaouira, then north to Oualidia
A slower morning in Essaouira — the fish market and the port are at their most interesting early — before travelling north along the coast road. The route passes Safi, a working port town known for its ceramics, and continues to Oualidia. The lagoon here is separated from the Atlantic by a rock bar, which makes the water calm and the shellfish farming possible. Afternoon at the lagoon, with oysters if you would like them. Overnight in Oualidia.
Day 3
Oualidia and El Jadida
A relaxed morning by the lagoon: walking the sand spit, birdwatching in the wetlands where flamingos and waders are often present outside the summer months, or swimming. In the afternoon continue north to El Jadida. The Cité Portugaise is a compact walled quarter, and the Portuguese cistern beneath it — a vaulted underground chamber with a shallow reflecting pool — is remarkable. Overnight in El Jadida.
Day 4
El Jadida to Casablanca
A short drive up the coast to Casablanca. The Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the water, is one of the very few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslim visitors may enter, on guided visits at set times. From there, the art deco and Mauresque architecture of the city centre around Boulevard Mohammed V, the Habous quarter and the corniche. Transfer to your hotel or to Mohammed V airport for your onward flight.

Who it suits
Travellers who want to slow down after an inland journey, families with young children who need shorter drives and a safe beach, and anyone flying out of Casablanca who would rather reach it along the coast than on the motorway. It is also a good standalone route for a second visit to Morocco.
Atlantic, not Mediterranean
This is the Atlantic coast: cooler, windier and greener than the interior, with strong surf on the open beaches and safe swimming mainly at Oualidia. Sea temperatures stay moderate year-round. If you are looking for calm warm water and Andalusian-influenced towns, that is the Mediterranean north around Tetouan and Al Hoceima — a different route, and one we build separately.
How it can be customised
Add a second night in Essaouira for windsurfing, riding on the beach or a hammam day; add a night in Safi for its ceramic workshops; extend south from Essaouira instead, toward Sidi Kaouki and Mirleft; combine the route with an inland journey through the Sahara or the imperial cities. Every stage can be lengthened or removed.
