A private passage through Morocco’s royal capitals, Roman history, Atlas landscapes and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Morocco's imperial cities — Fes, Meknes, Marrakech and Rabat — were each, at different moments, the seat of a dynasty. This nine-day private journey connects them with the Roman site of Volubilis and with the landscape that made those cities possible: the Middle Atlas, the Ziz Valley and the caravan routes that ended at the Sahara.
Nine days is a focused length. Rather than adding the northern Rif or the Atlantic coast, this route keeps to the historic spine of the country and gives each city enough time for a proper guided day. Fes and Marrakech both receive a full day with a licensed local guide, Rabat and Meknes are visited in passing but with context, and the desert is given a genuine overnight rather than a token stop.
The second half turns the journey into a landscape route. From the dunes of Erg Chebbi the road follows the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, the kasbahs around Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech. The contrast is deliberate: after the density of Fes, the south feels enormous and quiet.
Driving is honest on two days — Fes to the desert edge, and Dades to Marrakech — but both are broken into stages with real stops rather than treated as transfers. If your schedule allows an extra night, the most useful place to add one is in the Sahara or in the Skoura and Ouarzazate area.

Day 1
Arrive Casablanca, transfer to Rabat
Your driver meets you at Casablanca airport. If time and your energy allow, see the Hassan II Mosque exterior and the Atlantic corniche before continuing north to Rabat, about ninety minutes away. Rabat is a calm and green introduction to Morocco, with a walled medina, the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river and the wide colonial-era avenues of the modern capital. Overnight in Rabat.
Day 2
Rabat, Meknes and Volubilis to Fes
Begin with Rabat's principal sites — the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the kasbah, the medina — then travel inland. Meknes, the seventeenth-century capital of Moulay Ismail, is a city of colossal gates, walls and granaries with a noticeably slower atmosphere than Fes. Continue to Volubilis, where mosaic floors, arches and olive groves make the Roman presence in North Africa unusually tangible. Arrive in Fes in the evening. Overnight in Fes.
Day 3
Fes with a licensed local guide
A full day inside Fes el-Bali. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and effectively a medieval city still in use: madrasas with carved cedar and zellij, the Qarawiyyin complex, fondouks built for caravan traders, the tanneries, and quarters organised around specific crafts. A good guide is essential here, both for orientation and for understanding what you are looking at. The day can be weighted toward architecture, artisan workshops or food. Overnight in Fes.
Day 4
Fes to the desert edge at Erfoud
Leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas through Ifrane and the cedar forests near Azrou. The plateau around Midelt marks the transition to the pre-Sahara, and beyond it the road enters the Ziz Valley, where a dense palm oasis follows the river between red cliffs. Viewpoints over the valley are among the most striking on any Moroccan road. Arrive in the Erfoud or Rissani area in the late afternoon. Overnight near the desert edge.
Day 5
Rissani, Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
A shorter driving day dedicated to the Tafilalt and the dunes. Depending on the day of the week, the market at Rissani is one of the most authentic in southern Morocco. Continue to Merzouga and, in the late afternoon, into Erg Chebbi itself — by camel if you would like the classic approach, or by 4x4 if you would prefer. Watch the sunset from a high dune while luggage is transferred to camp, then dinner, music around the fire and a night under exceptionally dark skies. Overnight at a private desert camp.
Day 6
Merzouga to the Dades Valley via Todra
Sunrise over the dunes if you wish, then travel west through Erfoud and Tinejdad to Tinghir. The Todra Gorge narrows dramatically where the river cuts through the limestone; there is time to walk the flat gorge floor before lunch. Continue through Boumalne Dades into the Dades Valley, arriving at a kasbah-style lodge in the late afternoon. Overnight in the Dades Valley.
Day 7
Dades to Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou
The long westward day. Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Kelaat M'Gouna and Skoura's palm grove to Ouarzazate, then visit Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified ksar above the Ounila river. Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the afternoon and descend to Marrakech. If you prefer a gentler version of this day, an overnight in Skoura or Aït Ben Haddou can be added. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 8
Privately guided Marrakech
A full guided day in the Red City: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia and the medina's craft quarters, with time in the souks alongside someone who can explain the trades rather than steer you between shops. Gardens, museums or a hammam can be added, and the day can finish around Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls open. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 9
Departure
A relaxed final morning in the medina and a private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport, or the start of an extension toward Essaouira, the Atlantic coast or the High Atlas valleys.

Who it suits
Travellers with a little over a week who care most about history, cities and architecture but do not want to miss the Sahara. It works well for first visits, for couples and for small family groups, and it is a good fit if you would rather have two properly guided city days than a longer route with shallower stops.
How it can be customised
Add a second Sahara night for a full desert day; add a night in Skoura or Aït Ben Haddou to soften Day 7; start in Fes or Tangier instead of Casablanca; extend from Marrakech to Essaouira; include a cooking experience or an artisan-focused day in Fes. Camel riding is always optional with a 4x4 alternative. Displayed itineraries are starting points, not fixed packages.

Riads within the Fes and Marrakech medinas, a comfortable hotel or guesthouse in Rabat, kasbah lodges in the south and a private ensuite tent in the Sahara.
